Journey Overview

"They can do it sometimes" isn't inconsistency. It's context.

You've been told your child is "smart but lazy," "capable when motivated," or "inconsistent." You've watched them ace a one-on-one assessment and shut down on the same kind of task in a classroom. The pattern looks like character. It's not.

What you're seeing is the gap between cognitive capacity and cognitive demand. A quiet testing room demands very little. A classroom — with noise, time pressure, multi-step instructions, social negotiation, and emotional regulation running in the background — demands enormous amounts of working memory and executive function. The same child has different capacity in different contexts. The data from one environment doesn't predict performance in the other.

What changes after this journey

You will be able to explain the "why" behind classroom breakdowns using cognitive mechanics, not effort or character narratives. You will name the executive function components your child struggles with, predict when a task will overload them, and articulate why testing conditions don't reflect reality — in language a school team can engage with.

Who This Journey Is For

If you've heard "smart but lazy," "inconsistent," or "they can do it when they want"

Your child is bright. Their test scores say they can do the work. But they freeze on multi-step assignments, melt down after a productive hour, forget instructions they just heard, or hit a wall around the same time each day. Teachers describe them as "moody" or "uneven." The narrative blames effort, motivation, or attitude. That narrative is wrong, and this journey gives you the cognitive science to explain why.

This journey is the most standalone-friendly in the track. Each module addresses a distinct cognitive mechanic and works on its own. If you only have time for one section, pick the one closest to what you're seeing right now — the others will be here when you need them.

What You Will Gain

By the end of this journey, you will be able to

Name the eight executive function components and recognize which ones your child is struggling with
Predict when a task will exceed your child's cognitive load threshold — before the meltdown happens
Spot demand stacking: why a task that looks simple is actually compound, and why "harder" can become "impossible"
Explain why testing conditions don't predict classroom performance — and why "they did fine in the room" isn't the proof the school thinks it is
Journey Structure

Four sections, one module each, plus supporting resources

0 of 4 required assets complete · 0 of 3 optional. Four modules in a deliberate sequence: cognitive architecture → the threshold → demand stacking → context as multiplier. The first three build on each other; module 7 stands on its own and can be taken anytime.

You understand the breakdowns. Now turn knowledge into action.

You can now explain the cognitive mechanics of why your child struggles. Journey 4 turns that understanding into an evidence-based advocacy practice — tracking what supports actually work, running trial-and-adjust cycles, and walking into meetings with data, not feelings.

Come back to this journey when behavior changes at home, when a school team uses "effort" or "motivation" language you want to reframe, or when you're trying to understand a new breakdown pattern.

You can explain the "why"

You've worked through all four modules: EF, cognitive load, demand stacking, and context. You can now explain breakdowns using cognitive mechanics, not effort narratives. That's the language schools listen to. Journey 4 turns understanding into action: tracking supports, proving what works, and adjusting based on evidence.
